Baby Math

Your baby may not know how to count, but she can tell the difference between less and more.

Kristy vanMarle, assistant professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri, tested the abilities of infants to size up quantities by presenting them with a series of two see-through cups: one containing a small amount and another containing a larger amount.

As long as the difference was significant, the babies chose the larger amount.

The results of vanMarle's research (Tracking and Quantifying Objects and Non-Cohesive Substances) will be published in the journal Developmental Science.
