About the Authors

We decided to write this book shortly after finishing work on our first pregnancy book, The Unofficial Guide to Having A Baby (Hungryminds, 1999). While we are proud of the fact that the book was the first mainstream pregnancy book to tackle the issues of pregnancy loss, infant death, and pregnancy after a loss in great depth, we felt that we still had a lot to say on this subject-an entire book's worth, in fact! The result is the book that you are holding in your hands.

You might be interested to know that we each had very personal reasons for wanting to write this book.

Ann's fourth child, Laura, was stillborn three years ago due to an umbilical cord knot. Her youngest child, Ian, was born healthy eleven-and-a-half months later, after what Ann describes as the most emotionally draining 41 1/2 weeks of her life! Because an earlier pregnancy had ended in miscarriage, she was beginning to wonder if she would ever be blessed with another living child. Ann wanted to write the type of book that she desperately needed, but yet was unable to find during her last pregnancy: a book that focussed on the unique challenges of planning another pregnancy: "I just couldn't relate to mainstream pregnancy books that assume that the biggest crisis you're facing in you pregnancy is whether the Winnie the Pooh wallpaper you ordered will arrive before the baby. I wanted a book that understood that my biggest concern was whether or not I'd end up with a healthy baby in my arms."

John also had his own reasons for wanting to write this book. He wanted to write a book that would address the types of concerns most often expressed by the couples he encounters in his obstetrical practice, couples who are embarking on pregnancy after miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death: "My reasons for doing this book have to do with the pain I've shared with so many hopeful would-be parents over the years when I had to sit beside them in the ultrasound room, office, or emergency room, and explain to them that their baby was dead or that they had otherwise lost the pregnancy that they had been so excited about just days, hours, or minutes before."

We think that this book is groundbreaking in many ways and hope that you will agree. Because we want this book to be as helpful as possible to parents experiencing miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death, we would like to encourage you to write to us care of our publisher if there's an issue that you'd like us to address in a subsequent edition of the book. You can also e-mail your comments to us at ann@having-a-baby.com

We hope that you enjoy this book and that you are blessed with the safe arrival of a healthy baby in the very near future.
